Each month, Keep Chadron Beautiful visits Chadron Headstart students and we learn about caring for nature, keeping our town beautiful and litter free, and the three R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Last year Chadron Preschoolers participated in the Trex Challenge. In six months students collected 684 pounds of plastic bags and overwrap! We are pleased to announce that students and their teachers have decided to continue collecting and making a difference on our planet. If you have a HeadStart student please send all your plastic bags, bread bags, and wrap from things like toilet paper, paper towels and cases of water to school with your child. Kids take great pride it making a difference and recycling is one of the easiest "Hero" actions!
If you too want to be a hero but you don't have a preschooler, plastic over wrap can be recycled in the plastic bag bins at Walmart and Safeway.
And please remember to use Reusable Shopping Bags when you go to the store. Reduce!

Chadron Middle School Wins Recycle Bowl--Chadron Breaks Record!
This year’s Recycle Bowl Competition between the Chadron Public Schools was the closest race to date. During the four-week competition Keep Chadron Beautiful collected and weighed recyclables brought to school by students at Chadron Primary, Intermediate and Middle Schools. In past years, there has been a clear winner, however, this year, only thirty pounds separated the Primary and Middle School. Chadron Middle School took the win, for the first time, with 2542.6 pound of recyclables. The primary students came in a close second with 2512 pounds and the intermediate students collected 1475.7 pounds. All the schools increased numbers and helped surpass the six thousand-pound goal set by Keep Chadron Beautiful.
The money from recycling the 300 pounds of cans collected during the competition was awarded to the Middle School. Jacki Dailey from KCB said, “We are extremely proud of all the schools and especially happy to see Middle School students increase their participation by so much this year. We need to thank the CSC Men’s Basketball Team for helping inspire the students to recycle and all the teachers really step up to support students with this competition.”
Totals from all the schools will be entered in the National Recycle Bowl Competition. Last year Chadron was first in the Community Division in the state of Nebraska and thirty-first nationally. The Recycle Bowl is a program sponsored by Keep America Beautiful to educate and promote recycling in over 1500 schools nationwide.

Thanks donors for all your help! And cheers for 2017!
We're feeling blessed at Keep Chadron Beautiful and looking forward to a great year. A big thanks for all the businesses and people who have given both monetary donations and volunteer hours to our organization! We truly cannot exist without you! Truly, we can't! Without local support KCB would not qualify for NDEQ grants!
We're very happy to announce that with your support, KCB has again been awarded education and recycling grants through the Nebraska Environmental Quality, making it possible to continue our mission --make Chadron clean, green and beautiful. Here's the NDEQ announcement.
Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Director Jim Macy has announced the awarding of $1,635,003 in 54 grants for litter cleanup, recycling, and public education programs and activities. Funds for the Litter Reduction and Recycling Grant Program are generated from a fee charged to certain manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers of products that commonly contribute to litter. The program has been providing grants annually since 1979. NDEQ awarded 24 grants in the recycling category, totaling $916,975. NDEQ awarded 12 grants in the cleanup category, totaling $108,483. NDEQ awarded 18 grants in the public education category, totaling $609,545.
Chadron has been awarded a grant to pay for 100 miles of rural roadside cleanups, a grant to help fund our yearly electronics recycling event and a public education grant. If you know of any groups needing to fundraise, please let us know. With our roadside grant we are able to pay $50 a mile just to pick up litter on our rural roads! If your classes, clubs or groups are interested in learning more about litter reduction, recycling or cleanups, please contact us. We'll add you to our schedule! Thanks to the education grant, we currently do monthly programs with all the schools, public library and headstart. We also have Clean Team in the summer and the Earth Day Festival, so there are lots of opportunities to learn to be greener!
Thanks again donors! We are looking forward to a great 2017!

- Use LED holiday lights. They use about 99 percent less energy than larger, traditional holiday bulbs and last up to 100,000 hours when used indoors.
- Send holiday e-cards instead of paper greeting cards or make sure the ones you buy have recycled content material.
- Use reusable grocery and shopping bags and make sure to recycle the non-reusable ones.
- Eliminate using disposable plates, cups, napkins and silverware. If you do buy disposable products look for ones with recycled content or decomposable ones
- Wrapping paper can be recycled with magazines and newspapers!
- Avoid all the wrapping and gifts that may never be used and give service gifts like movie or ice skating tickets, perhaps a manicure for her or music lessons for kids.
- Give home baked goods in reusable containers like tins or baskets. Who knows, maybe you'll get it back filled with goodies next year!
Give the Earth a Happy Holiday Season!
America Recycles DayOn November 12-13, KCB will host a Recycle Round Up event at Farmers State Bank, 205 West 3rd Street, in recognition of America Recycles Day. Bins will be located on the north side of the building and will be labeled with school names. Everything collected will be added to the Recycle Bowl totals. All aluminum cans will be recycled for cash and all money will be given to the winning school.
Last year over 1000 pounds of recyclables were collected during the Round Up! Start saving and tell a friend! America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day of coast-to-coast community driven awareness campaigns dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. |
CSC Mens Basket Ball Join Recycle BowlThe Chadron State College men's basketball team joined us at the Intermediate and Middle School to announce the beginning of the 2016 Recycle Bowl. This will be the third year that students Chadron Public School students participated in the National Competition. Last year they collected nearly 6000 pounds in the four week program. This years theme is Slam Dunk! and we had a blast getting students pumped up about recycling by having the team slam dunk recyclables. Competition starts on October 17th and ends on November 15th so save those recyclables and drop them off at your favorite school! Bins will be located on the playgrounds at the Primary, Intermediate and Middle Schools. The winning school get all the money from the aluminum cans and bragging rights! Last years reigning champ, the Intermediate School, promise to do everything they can to defend their title! Let the games begin!
Also, please be sure to support the CSC Basketball Team. They were a great role models for our kids. Taught them about recycling, showed off some great moves and stayed to play ball during recess. Their first home game is November 18th at the Chicoine Center. We hope you will show your support and fill the seats! |
The annual Recycle Bowl and America Recycles Day is right around the corner. Last year our local students and community members collected 5,460 pounds of recyclables during the four week Recycle Bowl contest!

We are looking forward to another great contest and are pleased to announce that we will be working with the CSC Men's Basketball Team to promote and complete another great year of competition.

Preschoolers Complete Challenge
Chadron Headstart, Scribbles Preschool and Little G Childcare has completed a Trex Challenge and won a bench and beautiful planter box for collecting over 500 pounds of plastic bags and overwrap. That's over 40,500 pounds! Students began collected on November 15th, America Recycles Day, and conclude their collecting on May 15th. So far they have collected 684 pounds. TREX sponsored the project and awarded the students with a lovely planter for participating and a fabulous bench for completing the challenge. Our hope is to place the bench at Finnegan Park so everyone has a chance to enjoy it! We need to thank Safeway. They handled all the shipping of the plastic bags to Trex! And it was truckloads! Trex is the first company to combine recycled plastic and reclaimed wood to for a low maintenance composite decking. We are thrilled with the quality of the bench (all 178 pounds of it) and urge everyone to check out their GREAT products! |
